clayTools Philosophy
clayTools founder Kaljit has creamed at the Vivienne Westwood adage "Buy once, choose well, make it last" at every buying decision she has ever had to make personally or at work. Believing that price must not be the driver of society's consumption, yet affordability is often an accessibility barrier. The cause - the seemingly, natural order of economic behaviour - reduce costs of production.
So is clayTools any different?
A few guilt-free principles that underpin clayTools business model along with the r'aison d'être:
- each tool is a future heirloom so needs to be unique as well as functional
- sharing provenance honours the history - know where its going and where its come from
- use found materials reduces input costs whilst adding value to planet's worth
- create savings and pass them on to suit collaborative personalities of clayers everywhere
- make on demand so no need to store inventory or pay warehousing costs
- eliminate market forces that cannot be proven (i.e. pay more for perceived luxury)
- can't do it alone so ask for help - artists also need to eat, live and find purpose
Slow consumption is tough to revert after a few decades of speeding up the supply chains. Whilst not proven , I believe implementing slow consumption is the route to address increasing numbers of mental health challenges, environment damage and unethical shareholder behaviour. More to come another time.
