The Firing Experience

What wood firing experience do I need to have?

This workshop is for those who are new to wood firing or want to have another go.

Take-away learning materials will be available to purchase after the workshop.

Will shells be provided for surface design or shelf props?

Nah. Wadding is provided.

Alternatives to shell fossicking could be oyster or abalone shells from restaurant or food waste.

Shifts and Schedule

What are the timings of the shifts that occur only in the first weekend?

Firing shifts commence at 6pm Saturday and end Monday approx 2am.

Each participant must commit to least two shifts as we feed the kiln for a continuous 32 hours.

What else will I be doing during the shift as a team?

  • Keep track of kiln in accordance with the log book
  • Reorganise and move wood piles
  • Pray to kiln spirits
  • Tell stories of your time at sea, sing songs of jolly and clink (non-alcoholic) drinks
  • problem solving and following instructions laid out to manage temperatures.

 Logistics 

How many people will be attending?

A maximum 8 participants, 2 teachers and a Kaljit

Where can I park?

Inside the gates on the property.

What kitchen facilities are available to use?

A kettle and microwave. Bring a drinks cooler for your frigerated items.

Tea, coffee, and milk provisions will be provided.

How many nights could I stay for the first weekend?

We suggest arriving on Friday afternoon at the latest and leave Monday evening at the earliest. i.e. 3 nights.

This is a suggestion only. Each participant must take full responsibility of their own safety when driving at night.

Where to stay if I’m doing nightshifts?

There is limited camping with shower and toilets for those who nominate for night shifts.  Bring your own supplies and equipment.

For a quieter sleep away from the night shifters working Wombat the Kiln, the caravan park four doors down may be an option.  There are multiple places to stay nestled amongst the many national parks in the area 

What storage facilities for my pottery and property are available?

Please leave valuables at home.  There are multiple areas to store your 5P supplies during the shift. 

Can I leave my crates at Bargo Pottery leading up to Day 3?

Yes if labelled.  

Each attendee is responsible for their own belongings. Bargo Pottery, ClayTools and Peter Dallas Phillips will NOT be liable for lost, damaged or stolen property.

Can I drink alcohol or smoke weed at Bargo Pottery?

No way. Illegal drugs or alcohol are NOT permitted on the premises. Similarly, any person deemed intoxicated by any member of the collective group will be asked to leave.

Can I bring my dog since Peter will be?

Nah
